My room occupied that sweet spot where morning coffee became a sightseeing activity. Soft greys, whites and lilac tones created a calm backdrop for the urban spectacle outside, while floor-to-ceiling windows delivered a reminder that Dubai has never subscribed to the concept of moderation. Yet the true showstopper sits four floors above street level.
The pool deck has achieved something close to social-media immortality. White loungers, unapologetically hot-pink towels and uninterrupted Burj Khalifa views create a scene so photogenic it practically comes with its own filter. By day, it’s Riviera-meets-Desert-Chic. By night, the mood shifts as DJs appear, shisha glows across tables and the skyline sparkles with theatrical precision.
It’s the sort of setting that encourages lingering. Not because you need another photograph, of course. Merely because the light is changing.

Breakfast at Dunes Café is an exercise in disciplined excess. Pastries sit beside mezze, Asian stews alongside freshly prepared eggs, smoothies next to enough fruit to convince yourself you’re making healthy choices. It is the kind of buffet where every lap around the room produces a new discovery and a fresh commitment to skip lunch.
The hotel’s celebrated afternoon tea, served in the lobby lounge, deserves its reputation. Refined without being precious, it introduces subtle Asian influences to the traditional ritual, making it feel distinctly Shangri-La rather than simply another tiered stand of sandwiches. But the true highlight of the weekend arrived at Shang Palace.
Peking duck is one of those dishes whose simplicity conceals extraordinary craftsmanship. The process begins days before service, with air-drying, seasoning and careful roasting designed to achieve the holy grail: lacquered, glass-like skin and succulent meat beneath. At Shang Palace, the result is nothing short of exceptional.
Presented with all the ceremony the dish deserves, the duck arrived carved tableside into impossibly crisp slices. Wrapped in delicate, paper-thin rice pancakes alongside cucumber, spring onion and sweet bean sauce, each bite delivered that perfect balance of crunch, sweetness and richness that has made the dish an icon.
It was, without exaggeration, the finest Peking duck I’ve eaten since a memorable trip to Hong Kong two years ago. The skin shattered delicately, the meat remained beautifully moist, and every component played its role with precision. In a city crowded with ambitious dining concepts and headline-grabbing openings, Shang Palace succeeds through something far more difficult: getting a classic exactly right. One leaves understanding why the restaurant continues to earn recognition among Dubai’s most respected dining destinations.
Old-School Hospitality in a City Obsessed with the New
Dubai rarely lacks for luxury hotels. What it occasionally lacks is personality.
Shangri-La Dubai feels refreshingly confident in what it is. While many newer properties compete for attention through spectacle, this hotel leans into something increasingly valuable: reliability.
Yes, there are moments that reveal its maturity. Some public spaces retain a slightly traditional character, and portions of the property hint at another era of luxury hospitality. Yet these details feel less like flaws and more like reminders that not every hotel needs to reinvent itself every season.
Service throughout the property is warm, polished and genuinely accommodating. Staff seem to appear precisely when needed and disappear when not—a talent far rarer than marble bathrooms or infinity pools.
The Horizon Club, perched high above the city on the 41st floor, elevates the experience further. Evening cocktails and canapés come paired with panoramic views and a noticeably more relaxed atmosphere than many of Dubai’s see-and-be-seen venues. It is the sort of place where conversations linger long after sunset and where one briefly entertains the fantasy of moving permanently into a club-level suite. By the end of the weekend, the verdict felt surprisingly clear.
It may not be the newest hotel in town, nor the flashiest. But between its enviable location, spectacular skyline views, genuinely excellent dining and that famously photogenic pool deck, it remains one of the city’s most dependable luxury addresses. In a destination built on constant reinvention, there’s something rather chic about a hotel that already knows exactly what it’s doing.
