Finnair, Gateway to the Wonders of the Nordic World.

From the golden stillness of the Gulf to the snow-laced silence of the Arctic Circle, flying with Finnair is less a journey and more a study in quiet excellence.
On my recent route from Doha to Rovaniemi, via Helsinki, the experience unfolded in four distinct chapters: Seamlessness, Service, Design and Destinations.

Seamlessness
Some airlines promise efficiency. Finnair embodies it.

Established in 1923 and now one of the world’s oldest airlines still operating, the Finnish flag carrier has refined the art of smooth travel over a century. From the Middle East, it offers daily year-round flights from Doha and Dubai to Helsinki — the only airline providing such consistent, direct access with unrivaled onward connections to Finnish Lapland.

This winter, the schedule is particularly impressive: up to 74 weekly flights to Rovaniemi alone, alongside Kittilä, Ivalo and Kuusamo. For travelers chasing the Northern Lights or snow-draped forests, the connectivity is unmatched.
Helsinki Airport — frequently recognized as one of the best in its size category — is designed for ease.

Transfers are short. Signage is intuitive. There is no chaos, no overwhelming scale. Instead, you glide from gate to lounge to onward flight in minutes, not miles. The journey north feels as smooth as powder snow beneath fresh boots.

Service
If efficiency is the backbone, warmth is the soul.
Finnair’s Business Class service is among the finest in the skies — not because it is ostentatious, but because it is sincere. The crew do not perform hospitality; they practice it. The energy is gentle, almost maternal — like the steady reassurance of a Finnish mama. It is attentive without intrusion, polished without pretense.

There is something deeply comforting about being cared for in such an unforced way. Needs are anticipated quietly. Conversations are natural. Smiles feel genuine. Then comes the ritual of blueberry juice — sweet, tart, unmistakably Nordic. It’s a small gesture, but it sets the tone: authentic, rooted, thoughtful.

Even the Helsinki lounge reflects this philosophy. On the non-Schengen side, Finnair’s Business Lounge offers free-flowing cuisine — from Asian dishes to Finnish classics — alongside Italian wines poured generously at a beautifully designed bar. Abundance is offered calmly, without spectacle.

Design
Nordic design is often described as minimalist, but that word doesn’t quite capture the atmosphere onboard Finnair’s renewed long-haul cabins, completed in 2024. The award-winning Business Class Air Lounge seat, developed with Collins Aerospace, redefines traditional inflight comfort. It doesn’t recline in the expected way — instead, it invites you to settle into a sculpted space that feels both structured and indulgent. It’s a cocoon of calm at 35,000 feet.

The cabin palette is soft and airy. Clean lines. Subtle textures. Nothing shouts; everything whispers.
In the lavatories, Swedish skincare brand L:A Bruket provides botanical-infused products — another tactile reminder of the Nordic landscape. At Helsinki, the design narrative continues. The lounge blends warm wooden finishes with cool blue tones, echoing Finland’s forests and winter skies. The result is sleek but inviting — modern, yet deeply connected to nature.

Destinations
Finnair may be understated, but its network is ambitious. With a fleet of over 80 aircraft, the airline connects nearly 100 destinations across Finland, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North America. Recently, it announced 12 new European destinations for summer, alongside a new route to Toronto. In October, it will launch flights to Melbourne, becoming one of the few European airlines offering direct service to Australia.

Yet it is Lapland that feels like its spiritual home. Rovaniemi — the official capital of Lapland — is where the Arctic reveals its magic: endless white forests, frozen rivers, and skies that shimmer with aurora. Finnair doesn’t just take you there; it prepares you for it. From the blueberry juice to the birch-toned interiors, the experience subtly transitions you from desert warmth to northern wonder.

Recognized by Skytrax as the Best Airline in Northern Europe for the 15th consecutive year in 2025, Finnair has achieved something rare in modern aviation: consistency with character. Seamless. Warm. Thoughtfully designed. Deeply connected to place.
