Lunch with a View: Lucas Raven Dines at MamaZonia, Dubai Marina

Pier 7’s Amazon-inspired hotspot pairs Marina views with food and service that match them.

Some tables in Dubai Marina hand you the skyline and leave the rest to chance. MamaZonia is not one of them. Our editor-in-chief, Lucas Raven, lunched here recently, and the view over the water was only the opening act.

The setting

MamaZonia sits on the second floor of Pier 7, Marina Mall’s purpose-built culinary tower, with sweeping views of Dubai Marina. The building’s circular design gives every floor a panoramic outlook over the Marina and the Arabian Gulf, and diners can sit indoors or alfresco.

Step inside and the city falls away. Foliage seems to cover everything, ceiling included, so the room feels closer to a greenhouse than a Marina restaurant. Vines trail overhead like a jungle canopy, and guests pass beneath a gnarled mango tree to reach a cocktail bar with discreet tribal-pattern tiles. Elsewhere, bold wildlife murals and an ornate wooden birdcage with tropical birds add to the sense of stumbling on a lost jungle ruin. Tropical wallpaper and hand-painted murals complete the effect.

The terrace is the other draw. Pier 7 is known for its wrap-around terrace looking across the water and the surrounding high-rises, and for lunch it is hard to beat. Valet parking is available, and the dress code is smart casual.

The lunch

Lucas began with the wagyu beef empanadas, folded with confit onion and lime and finished with a bright huancaina sauce. Then came the kale tiger prawns, sautéed with lemongrass, soy and bonito, scattered with cashew and served over sticky rice.

For mains, the stir-fried beef arrived glossy with wok sauce and ginger, lifted by crushed peppercorn. The chicken donburi was the comfort-food counterpoint: katsu-fried chicken under tonkatsu sauce, with sautéed kang kong and a poached egg. Peru, Japan and Brazil share the table here, and none loses its accent.

Lucas was just as impressed by the service: attentive without hovering, warm without being rehearsed. In a city where hospitality is a competitive sport, this team plays to win.

Then dessert. The Mango Pango, a sharing creation crowned with cotton candy, is a dream in spun sugar and was the highlight of the meal. Order it for the table, and don’t expect anyone to share graciously. Given the mango tree overhead, it feels like the room’s own signature.
